Fitting In Fail: Doing Drugs & Drinking

Story submitted by Jordan W.

Fitting in, an issue every child goes through at some point in their life. But as an alcoholic, it’s pretty much an everyday, every second battle to fit in. My funny story of fitting in while drinking or drugging starts when I was about 10-years-old. It was 1999 and N’Sync was very popular at that time. All of my friends were dyeing their hair or getting blonde frosted tips because Justin Timberlake- the man, the myth, the legend- had frosted tips. So, of course I had the urgent need to look and be like everyone else. I decided it was a good idea to “frost my tips”. See, what’s funny is that I’m half African American, a race that’s not quite known for beautiful, straight hair. So when I tried frosting my tips blonde, they came out orange. And when I applied L.A Looks hair gel to my nappy roots, it looked as if Charizard (Pokemon character) himself blew a flaming fireball on top of my head. Needless to say, my plan of fitting in, actually made me stand out, and not in a good way.

The need to fit in became more apparent in high school. Kids my age were saying they were getting drunk, and coming back to school the next day with the craziest stories: “Dude I was so hammered last night, Ashley let me see her underwear and it was awesome!” So with a body full of teenage hormones and the constant need to feel like I had to fit in, I went to a party and started drinking with everyone. See, what I failed to realize was that no one was really drinking- well they were, but ‘Mike’s Hard Lemonade’ doesn’t count in my book. See, I set out to get drunk like everyone else, so I stole a bottle of tequila from my mom’s liquor cabinet and headed out to become one of those “kids who gets hammered and comes back to school with cool stories.” Drinking tequila the same way people drink Mike’s Hard probably wasn’t the best decision on my part, but at that moment all I wanted to do was be like everyone else, especially coming back to school with an awesome story. So after I finished two full cups of tequila, the last thing I remember was mumbling something along the lines of, “Hey panties, let me see your Ashley!” I missed school for the next week with alcohol poisoning. I instantly became the kid who could not handle his alcohol, and my constant need for fitting in was handicapped from that point on.”
