Tommy Hanson Dead At 29

Tommy was only 29 years old and stood 6’6” tall, pitching five seasons in the major leagues. Four of those seasons were with the Atlanta Braves and one was with the Los Angeles Angels.

Atlanta Braves president John Schuerholz released this statement on Tuesday morning:

“We are incredibly saddened to learn of Tommy’s tragic passing,” Schuerholz said. “He was a favorite in our clubhouse and with our staff and he will truly be missed by everyone in Braves Country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, family, former teammates and friends.”

Hanson was not alone during his final hours. Many of Hanson’s former teammates were close by when he passed in Atlanta at the Piedmont Hospital, a representative from the Braves explained to

The death of the 29 year old former pitcher has spurred an outpour of condolences on Twitter by former teammates.

Former Braves closer and now closing pitcher for the San Diego Padres, Craig Kimbrel, tweeted on November 10th about Tommy: “Tommy Hanson was a great person, it hurts my heart to see him go so soon. My prayers and thoughts are with the Hanson family.”

Another friend and former teammate, Josh Reddick, now MLB outfielder for Oakland, also tweeted, “Thoughts and prayers to the family of Tommy Hanson. Great guy and competitor. RIP”

Tommy Hanson was taken to the hospital early Sunday morning because of breathing issues. He then suffered major organ failure, slipped into a coma, and ultimately died. At this time there is only speculation of a drug overdose; an autopsy will later confirm cause of death.

It is always heartbreaking to learn any person has passed away at such a young age and in such a devastating way.  We hope that during this time, friends and family are filled with peace, courage, and faith as they heal from this tragic event.
