Staying Strong: Demi Lovato 3 Years Sober

Having celebrated her third year in sobriety earlier this week, the 22-year-old star was sure to give credit to her long time boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama.  “I wish I could put into words how grateful I am for this man,” she spoke of him.  “But my love has grown to a level that words could never possibly express how much this man completes me. He’s loved me the way I never thought I deserved to be loved and with this day marking my 3rd year sober… After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery… he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is. I really wouldn’t be alive today without him. I love you Wilmer.”

Demi Lovato famously entered a rehabilitation facility called Timberline Knolls in Illinois during October 2010 after an incident in which she had a physical altercation with a backup dancer and punched her in the face.  It was at this facility that she was treated for her eating disorders and cutting.  “I was not eating and purging and self harming… it literally ended up driving me insane,” the star reflected back in 2012 with DailyMail.  During treatment, she was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder.  “It was kinda when I got a little crazy and maybe possibly, out of control,” she began to describe her illness as always taking on more than she could handle in terms of projects.  Today, she finds balance, stability, and peace of mind in her life.  According to TMZ, the star additionally spent time living in a halfway house among other women in the same predicament as her.  With Demi Lovato 3 years sober and having grown as a strong woman throughout the process of her recovery, her boyfriend,Valderrama, spoke to her publicly, saying, “Today, we lay another stone together. It is now 3 years since you said: I am more important then any past, demon, disorder or addiction… Where you decided that YOUR life was worth living while loving yourself… And I’m sure glad you did… I knew then the woman you’ve become now… I am proud and honor to be front row to see the world you are about to change. I love you Demi.”

Demi Lovato 3 years sober: Trudging the road to recovery

In addition to having the words “Stay Strong” tattooed on her wrists, she tells herself in the mirror “you are a rockstar” and “you are beautifully and wonderfully made,” according to a statement the star made during an interview in a video posted on Popsugar.  These statements to herself pull her through because she knows the road to recovery can be bumpy.  “It’s been difficult,” Demi spoke about her struggles with food, weight, and body image that seem to be a daily battle.  “I almost went back to rehab for my eating disorder last summer.  I was obsessing over food and terrified of it at the same time.”  She said Wilmer was mentioning how it was becoming prevalent in her life again, which made her keep vigilant of her recovery.  “Be patient, because real change takes time,” she reassured. “If you want to get stronger, you’ve got work for it. Any other way isn’t going to be healthy, and it’s not going to last.”
