Sharethis Watershed

self-injury-awareness-dayMarch 1 is Self-Injury Awareness Day!  This is a pivotal day because self-mutilation poses a serious risk to those who are inflicting harm upon themselves.  Getting educated about the issue is important so that we can help prevent and treat those struggling in silence.

Self-Injury Awareness Day

For the past sixteen years, Self-Injury Awareness Day has kicked off every March 1.  Hosted by LifeSIGNS, this movement takes place with the mission to provide information on self-harm so that individuals don’t have to go on suffering alone. Self-harm is a serious issue that can best be dealt with first by raising awareness.  Having a day to educate people who don’t know about the dangers of self-injury could help save a life.

Getting facts straight

Putting an end to the stigma behind self-injury begins with an accurate understanding of what it actually is.  Self-injury is a way that individuals cope for lack of a healthier coping mechanism when dealing with situations in their lives.  A person may cause physical harm to themselves because they do not know how to express their feelings.  They may want to release emotions that are building up within them to get a sense of euphoria that is very much similar to how a drug addict would get high from taking substances.  There are multiple different types of self-injury.  No matter what it is called – self-harm, self-injury, self-mutilation – if a person is causing any type of damage to themselves, it is detrimental to their well-being.  LifeSIGNS believes that appropriate word choice and language is a key component when professionals are working closely with self-injurers and that these individuals should be able to choose how they would like to self-identify.

Taking action

Knowing what to do in the event that someone is engaging in self-harm begins with understanding what the signs look like.  Taking notice of the types of personalities that may be most likely to latch onto these self-injurious tendencies is important.  People to watch out for may include those with perfectionist attitudes, depression, suicidal thoughts, mood disorders, anger issues, negative perception of their body, past with bullying, sexual trauma, abuse, other mental health issues, and/or lack confidence.  Physical signs of someone who may be hurting themselves could be that they are wearing long sleeves, have scars, have bands on their arms, constantly tugging their hair, weight loss and/or gain, bruises, drug abuse, and acting out sexually.  A great way to stand up and have a voice to raise awareness in honor of the day is to recite affirmations or make the commitment to refrain from negative self-talk.

The big picture

Self-harm is merely known as an umbrella term for a much larger issue that unfolds into a manifestation of several behavioral issues pertaining to the mistreatment of one’s self.  Self-Injury Awareness Day puts emphasis on the importance of nurturing self-care practices, being vigilant unhealthy coping mechanisms, working to correct any underlying pressing issues, and addressing any trending behavioral concerns creating infliction.

One of the most valuable aspects about having set days like Self-Injury Awareness Day is that it allows individuals to gain necessary knowledge about important societal issues like self-harm so that more people can be helped.

Individuals that are engaging in risky and harmful self-injuring behaviors often are acting out in other ways.  Substance use disorders like addiction may unfold.  Because this is a three fold disease that affects individuals mentally, physically, and spiritually, The Watershed wants to help you recover.  Call today at 1-800-861-1768 so you can begin living again.
