SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week 2013: Pledge To Make A Difference

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) launched the second annual National Prevention Week this past Sunday, May 12th. The 2012 event proved to motivate thousands to get involved with spreading public awareness of, and activity surrounding, substance abuse and behavioral health problems. The 2013 SAMHSA week is expected to be just as engaging. The  SAMHSA web page provides various opportunities for individuals, associations, and organizations to get involved with empowering communities by promoting prevention strategies, and educating others about mental health issues. If you are interested in making an impact before the weeks’ end on May 18th, it’s not too late! Here are some simple ways to make a big difference.

National Prevention Week 2013

Educate Yourself On The Issues & Prevention Strategy

The slogan of this year is “Your choice. Your voice. Make A Difference,” highlighting where positive outcomes in substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion begin: individual life choices. In order to make wise choices pertaining to prevention, it’s important to educate yourself on the issues most prevalent in your life and your community. Once you have determined the problem you want to address, you can choose a prevention strategy that will have the greatest impact in the lives of people around you. National Prevention Week is supporting public education and prevention by designating a theme for each day of the week. Here are the theme topics of 2013 you can learn from:

Sunday, May 12 – Smoking Prevention and Cessation

Monday May 13 – Prevention of Underage Drinking

Tuesday, May 14 – Prevention of Prescription and Illegal Drug Abuse

Wednesday, May 15 – Prevention of Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Related Illnesses

Thursday, May 16 – Suicide Prevention

Friday, May 17 – Promotion of Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Well-Being

The “I Choose” Project

If you believe in the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words,” you will love the prevention project “I Choose.” Instructions are to take a picture of yourself and whoever is involved, while holding a sign with a written personal message stating why you choose substance abuse prevention or the promotion of mental health. For example, “I choose treatment for my health,” or “I choose prevention for my family.” Then, simply send the photo to the contact provided on the project web page to be reviewed and posted in the “I Choose” gallery, where viewers can be inspired by your positive example.

Sign the “Prevention Pledge” on Facebook

By signing the “Prevention Pledge” located on SAMHSA’s Facebook page, everyone has the ability to make personal commitments to prevention and awareness. The pledge provides practical steps to take for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and building community partnerships. Whether your voice is heard through spoken or written word, resolving to live a lifestyle of health and wellbeing sets an example that will encourage others to do the same. Share these commitments with friends and family on your own page, and begin to see how significant your life choices are to the lives of others.
