PIC: Patriots For Parity
Addiction is a disease and alcoholics and addicts deserve to be treated fairly when it comes to access to treatment services. This is why many legislators, healthcare organizations, healthcare providers and community members are working even harder to improve our laws to protect the rights of sick and suffering addicts and alcoholics trying to obtain treatment.
What is Parity?
Parity is a law that requires health insurance plans to cover substance use disorder and mental health treatment at the same level as any other medical treatment. Without the proper treatment, an addict and alcoholic has a reduced chance for recovery, resulting in life and death situations.
Although the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) was passed in 2008, those suffering from addiction and mental health issues are still facing challenges as they try to obtain treatment for their illnesses. The 2012 field hearings are intended to shine a light on those challenges so that addiction and mental health patients are able to obtain the care they need.
We support Patriots for Parity
Our goal is to see community members and professionals who are in Delray Beach, FL, join The Watershed and others for a field hearing with former Congressmen Patrick Kennedy, Congressman Ted Deutch and State Senator Maria Sachs on the implementation and enforcement of the Federal Parity Law.
At the field hearing, patients, providers, and other experts will provide testimony about how parity has improved access to care in the mental health and addiction treatment field and shed light on areas where barriers still exist. We hope you will join us today, October 9th, 2012, at 5:30 PM in Delray. Please RSVP to PatriotsforParityFL@gmail.com.
