Opioid-EpidemicDoctors who prescribed buprenorphine (brand names Suboxone and Subutex)  to help treat opioid addiction were originally limited to treating only 100 patients at a time. Under a new rule that was just announced by the White House to help combat the nation’s opioid epidemic, now doctors can treat as many as 275 patients.

Opioid Epidemic

Drug addiction, mainly cheap heroin laced with a powerful and deadly painkiller known as fentanyl, has become the nation’s new black plague. There are an estimated 129 overdose deaths in the U.S. daily, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Buprenorphine is a prescription drug that is used to block the effects of heroin among other opioids, like Percocet and Oxycodone. The prescription medication is used to help prevent withdrawal side-effects.

Buprenorphine can be an excellent aid when detoxing a patient, but could be harmful if used as a long-term solution substituting one drug addiction for another. This is because these alternative drugs can still be abused if misused.

Many critics are claiming that buprenorphine still leaves the addict dependent on a drug. Long-term concerns are that this new rule will allow another set of clinics to be converted to pill mills which could lead to further addiction or death.

Even with these concerns, policymakers and experts still believe the 100 patient limit is blocking treatment. An estimated $1.1 billion budget request along with the new rule will enable 70,000 addicts to be able to access treatment in the coming year, state officials.

Recovering From Opioid Addiction

There is no debate that America is suffering from a drug epidemic and that addicts need help, but replacing one addictive drug with another drug that can be abused might not be the best defense when it comes to combating the disease of addiction. Since addiction is a disease and is progressive, it doesn’t matter what drug you replace in the addicts body, it will continue to feed their addiction and therefore feed their cravings and obsession. The best way to beat addiction is to help the addict detox safely off all drugs and help them learn how to live a life drug-free.
