19 year old Olympic gymnast, Simone Biles, is dominating at the Rio Olympics earning her a well-deserved gold. What is even more amazing about Biles is that she overcame the trauma of being taken from her home at an early age. Her father was absent and her mother suffered from drug abuse and alcoholism.

Simone was born in 1997 and it is believed that her mother was actively abusing drugs and/or alcohol while pregnant according to theinfluence.org. The gold medalist’s biological mother, Shannon, had given away her rights to her daughters, Simone and Adria, while she battled substance abuse issues. Now that Simone is all over the news her mother Shannon has come out to TMZ saying that she is 9 years clean and sober and that she is not the woman she once was.

Ron Biles, Simone’s grandfather and caregiver said in an interview with NBC that he and his wife, Nellie, had helped fill a parental void while giving Simone the upbringing, care, and love she needed in order to succeed in life.

Shannon felt that her father was inconsiderate of her past struggles.

“I feel like they’re defaming my character,” Shannon explained. “I was struggling back then but I’ve gotten better. … He didn’t have to be so harsh about it. He could’ve been a little bit more classy with it. He didn’t have to put me under the bus.”

At this time Shannon does speak with her daughters every few months in an attempt to mend what was lost, but in the meantime, Simone has greatly succeed against all odds and is a true example that her past does not have to dominate her present or even her future.

Congrats Simone Biles, we can’t wait to see what amazing things are in store for you and your family!
