Motivational Meditation Monday: Keep Calm & Love Self
“The only person who can pull me down is myself, and I'm not going to let myself pull me down anymore.”
Love self. How many times did we pull ourselves down when we were in active drug addiction or alcoholism? That crushing moment when we would tell ourselves “you’re worthless, nobody loves you, you don’t matter” and actually believe what we were saying. Being clean and sober in recovery gives us that opportunity to learn what self-love really means and how to apply to our daily lives.
As we grew in recovery, we began to see how we were our own worst enemy. We saw the destructive behaviors that kept us back from living normal lives. Our own thoughts and actions held us from loving ourselves, and loving others. We felt an enormous hole inside that couldn’t be filled with anything that made us happy. We saw that we truly were in our own way. After working our program we started to move out of the way and let our Higher Power take the wheel. We saw that others had a sparkle in their eyes, they were genuinely happy and we knew we could have that too. We just needed to work towards it.
In order to love self, we had to think outside of ourselves. We started to take simple actions towards being a better person each day through really working a program of recovery. We noticed that those actions led to internal happiness, and a changed perception of life. We saw only a glimpse, but knew it existed. We were told if you really wanted to feel fulfilled in life, if you wanted to fill that empty hole, you had to help others. We saw that our program of recovery had to be a self-less program, we had been selfish our whole lives.
Our program of recovery taught us how to love ourselves, so we could love others.
