Motivational Meditation Monday: Keep Calm and Take Chances

Taking risks, or chances, in life is sometimes necessary if we want to grow and be happy. If we did not take chances, many of us would not be sharing our experience, strength, and hope with others in recovery. For some of us, stepping into recovery was the biggest step we have ever taken and one of the most frightening ones too. A leap of faith into the unknown is not something many addicts or alcoholics like to do. We tend to shy away from change and continue to stay in our comfort zone, even if it’s killing us.
Sometimes we have a false sense of pride the longer we stay clean and sober. We believe we shouldn’t be making the same mistakes over and over again and tend to question why. We take stupid risks based on impulse, but when it’s time to take a healthy risk that could benefit us; we feel self-destruction is a better way to go. This is why we need meditation, fellowship, and meetings. If we are not able to meditate, ask others, and listen to a message of recovery; we may miss the answer that we are seeking.
What happens when we forget to work our program in all affairs? We are irrational and impulsively base our decisions and actions on how we feel and what we want. We come to find that the decision we have made was in fact a mistake and causes us harm (sometimes others) and pain. That pain can be a driving force more towards making a better decision or back to addiction, the choice is ours. Unfortunately, some addicts and alcoholics also use this experience as an excuse to be fearful of all change because the consequences that shook them right out of their comfort zone were so severe.
Addicts and alcoholics hate making decisions, change, and action towards that change. A thousand forms of fear replace rational thought and no matter how much time we have, we are still human and forget that we have those feelings. We may try to stay stagnant in recovery and find ourselves falling backwards because we are not allowing ourselves to grow. We cannot allow our fears to stop us from making healthy changes, if we do, we may be causing ourselves more harm than good. How do you we know if we should take a risk? Meditate; talk with support, and go to meetings. We find the answers come to us without much effort when we remain calm and focus on our foot work.
