Mom on CBS: New Dark Comedy About Sobriety and AA

Sharethis Watershed

With millions of American’s across the nation in recovery from drugs and alcohol, it wasn’t going to be long before a more recovery focused T.V. show aired. “Mom”, a dark comedy about sobriety, premiered this past Monday on CBS. Mom is about a newly overly emotional single sober mom, Christy, who is played by Anna Faris. Christy struggles to not only raise two children, but also deal with her estranged alcoholic mother, Bonnie (Allison Janney,) who claims to be in recovery too. Christy has only 118 days sober in Alcoholics Anonymous and already is seen struggling with early sobriety.

AA Mom

So far the show does not seem to reflect what a real AA meeting is actually like. Alcoholics Anonymous is not just a place to vent problems, it’s actually a program of action. Those who have recovered from alcoholism in AA recovered because they worked their 12 steps, applied the steps to their life, and helped others do the same. Alcoholics Anonymous is actually a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength, and hope with one another so that they may solve their common problem and help others recover from alcoholism.

As the show continues, could it possibly give newcomers an inaccurate perception of what Alcoholics Anonymous is, or is not ?

I Am An Alcoholic

Although the depiction of what sobriety is (or may not be) and the program of Alcoholics Anonymous is somewhat skewed, it still may help break the stigma of alcoholism and recovery in today’s society. Drinking for an alcoholic is tragic, but recovery doesn’t have to be. There is a lot of fun to be had and most alcoholics who have found a solution in the rooms of AA will agree that they are not a glum lot. Many alcoholics who share their war stories of what it was like drinking and what it was like newly sober seem to share it sometimes in a humorous way, not because it was funny, but because they are grateful to be sober today and they know that their experience (both good and bad) can and will help others.

What are your views on the show Mom? Could the show hurt or help alcoholics?
