mental health awareness monthMay is Mental Health Awareness Month! There’s no better time to spread awareness of mental health issues and reduce the stigmas associated with them.  Suffering from a mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of.  More people suffer from them than society may think.  Mental health conditions aren’t the type of sickness a person can identify at first glance or even determine with a simple blood test, which is why prevention, intervention, and treatment is so important.  There are also different types of mental illnesses.  For example, addiction is a brain disease, which The Watershed Addiction Treatment Programs has been treating people for since admitting their very first patient on May 1, 1998. This is why we feel recognizing this month is that much more important.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is not just about reducing stigma, but also highlights the significance of treatment.  Millions of Americans are affected by mental illness and many struggle  in silence.  Learning to recognize what these issues look like is crucial. The idea that  people with mental health issues can function and live seemingly normal lives is not absurd.  In fact,  an estimated 41,149 deaths were reported as a result of suicide in 2013 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Ways to Raise Awareness This Month

Get informed

Understanding mental health issues and accepting that you or your loved one may need help is the first step to treatment.  By speaking with a trained medical professional, you or your loved one will be able to decide what treatment will work best for whatever mental health issue you may be facing.

Come together

Grab friends, family members, neighbors, and/or coworkers to have a discussion about mental health issues and how it may be affecting their lives. Having a simple conversation not only spreads awareness, but also may open the door to someone who is struggling.

Adequate care

Proper rest, food, vitamins, and exercise all play an important role in mental health.  There’s an expression that goes, “Charity begins at home,” so setting an example can help raise awareness for Mental Health Awareness Month.  When essential needs like these aren’t being met, an individual may place themselves at risk for emotional and mental disturbances.

Did you know that mental health issues are often co-occurring with brain diseases like addiction? If you or a loved one is dealing with any type of mental health issues and addiction to drugs or alcohol, help is just a call away.  Contact The Watershed today to speak with a mental health care professional and get the treatment options you deserve.
