MAY-MENTAL-HEALTH-AWARENESS-MONTHMay is Mental Health Awareness Month and it’s important to treat the health of your mind as you would your body. One in four adults in the United States has a mental health condition and there is nothing to be ashamed about having a mental health disorder. Life can be complicated, uncertain, and stressful; and struggling with a mental health issue alone can make it seem unbearable, but it doesn’t have to be.  The more we talk about mental health conditions and treatments, the less taboo the subject is. For a long time millions of people suffered in silence, but it’s time to break the stigma of mental health disorders and start living in the solution.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Keys to a Happier Healthier Mind & Body:

Social Support: You are not alone when it comes to any emotional or mental struggle and everyone can use support (even if you don’t suffer from a mental disorder). Finding others who have gone through some of the same struggles as you and who have found a solution to living a healthier lifestyle is one of the best ways to help heal the mind and body.

Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced meal and drinking plenty of water will not only help you physically feel better, but will also help you stay focused and happy. When we eat poorly, our body, mind, and mood is altered.

Vitamins & Medications: Make sure you are taking your vitamins daily. If you are on anti-depressants or another kind of mental health medication, be sure to take those as prescribed too.  Missing doses or not keeping with a routine as prescribed by the doctor could make your mental health disorder worse.

Stress Management: Meditation, yoga, art therapy, music, and any other forms of lowering your stress levels are crucial to having a healthy mind. Stress also affects the body, so find ways to manage these levels.

Rest & Relaxation: Get plenty of sleep and make sure there is time set aside each day to relax. Take a walk, a bath, or read a book. If you are not taking time for yourself to decompress, you will just add chaos to your condition and raise stress levels.

Exercise: Exercise is a proven method to helping the body and mind. This is also an excellent way to release extra energy and change your mood. Make a promise to yourself this Mental Health Awareness Month that you will exercise more.

Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Recovery: If you are using alcohol or (prescription) drugs to cope with a mental health disorder, you may want to stop.  Taking alcohol or drugs will only make it worse and you can become addicted after long periods of use. There are treatment programs that help addicts and alcoholics recover and some even offer dual diagnosis programs that treat both addiction and any other underlying mental health issues.

Getting Help
