Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, joined by soul singer Leon Bridges, presented “Kevin,” a new song about the utter destruction of addiction, at the American Music Awards (AMAs) in Los Angeles this year.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis: AMA

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis got a lot of support from their fans since the debut of Kevin on the AMAs. Macklemore explained on Instagram that the song was about his close friend Kevin who had died from prescription drug overdose.

“It was my attempt to process his death. To grieve. And also to examine the overabundance of prescription drugs in America. How quick we’re taught at an early age to put a pharmaceutical bandaid over our pain/anxiety.” Macklemore stated. “Not only is the topic close to home because of Kevin and others that I’ve lost to pills, it’s close to me because of my addiction. I’ve come very close to dying. I’m far from proud of that, but it’s my truth. I wish I could say I’m cured. That I have it all figured out. But that’s not the case. One day at a time I work to stay sober. There’s so much more to say. And hopefully a bigger conversation to be had. But I didn’t want to share this song without giving some context. I think of Kevin. I miss him. I hope he’s somewhere listening to this… I hope he got to watch our performance last night. I hope he’d be proud. “

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis words are powerful because they strike home and at the heart of what this nation continues to face – the plague of drug addiction. With more celebrities and media leaders coming out about the destruction of addiction in their lives and what they are doing to overcome addiction, the more the stigma of addiction will be smashed. This means more lives can be saved, more people can be treated for this deadly disease, and healthier future can be built for our youth.
