We want to help you party sober this holiday.The 4th of July Holiday weekend is upon us, and with it comes unique challenges and threats to sobriety. It’s important to remember while you celebrate the freedom of the United States, you also remember freedom from addiction and substance abuse. The holidays are a particularly difficult time, as abusing alcohol and drug-facilitated activities become socially acceptable, and even glorified. Avoid compromise in pivotal stages of addiction recovery and learn how to safeguard your sobriety this weekend by planning to party sober.

Tips To Party Sober

1. Pick your parties. You don’t need to attend each party you’re invited to, so plan on going to the ones you feel you’ll be most supported at as a sober person. A good way to prepare is by meditating, talking with your sponsor, and going with someone you trust.

2. Prepare mentally by visualizing how the holiday could go. Don’t obsess about it, but think about how circumstances could change for better or worse, and the best way to respond. A simple example is planning on what you’ll say if someone offers you a drink.

3. Practice the word, ‘No.’ Realize that you are not obligated to explain the reality of your recovery to everyone, when all you need to say is, “No, thank you.” If an individual is disrespectfully persistent, then walk away.

4. Spend some time with close friends and family who are supportive of you in recovery. Sometimes we have family members who are sober as well. Celebrating any holiday with these kinds of people is the best way to guard your sobriety. Don’t be afraid to ask for support!

5. Be prepared to exit if need be. Drive your own car, or go with someone who would be willing to go at a moment’s notice.

6. Finding a new tradition to celebrate the holidays is always a great way to remove yourself from old habits.

7. H.A.L.T. before you relapse. Keep balance in your day, check where you are at in hunger, fatigue, loneliness, or emotions. If you are hungry, eat a balanced meal. If you are experiencing an uncomfortable emotion, talk to someone about it. If you are lonely, call a sober friend you trust or attend a meeting. If you are tired, then take a nap or work to get a good night’s sleep.

8. See if anyone in the rooms are doing anything fun for the holiday. Sometimes groups get together an have sober parties, it’s best to ask.

10. Remember that recovery happens one day at a time. Just prepare, take it easy, and party sober!

The 4th of July commemorates those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy every day. Sadly, the disease of addiction threatens freedom even in the most basic sense; such as freedom to pursue health and independent living.
