Kristen Bell Talks About Depression: ‘I Felt Worthless’ (VIDEO)

Kristen Bell recently opened up about her own struggles with depression in hopes that it will help break the stigma of mental health illnesses.

Bell talked to Motto about her first experience with depression when she was in college, but like many who suffer from mental health issues, kept it to herself in hopes it would go away.

“I didn’t speak publicly about my struggles with mental health for the first 15 years of my career,” the Frozen star said. “But now I’m at a point where I don’t believe anything should be taboo. So here I am, talking to you about what I’ve experienced.”

Bell explained that during her New York University career shed felt “plagued with a negative attitude and a sense that I was permanently in the shade.” Expressing in further detail about how she all of a sudden just didn’t feel like her normal “bubbly positive” self, but rather isolated and alone.

What makes depression so powerful is that despite all the amazing things one can have in their life, there is still this looming shadow of sadness, loneliness, and despair. Bell recalled how she felt “worthless, like I had nothing to offer, like I was a failure.”

After some encouragement from her mother, Bell got help and eventually opened up and talked about her experience and recovery from anxiety and depression, helping smash the idea of what she calls the “extreme stigma” associated with mental health disorders.  “20% of American adults face some form of mental illness in their lifetime. So why aren’t we talking about it?” she questioned.

Her belief, like many other mental health advocates, is that getting a checkup from the neck up should be just as important as seeing your dentist. Someone who is seeking treatment for a mental health disorder shouldn’t think of themselves as weak. Just like we can’t control a cold or virus, we can’t control our brain chemistry, and in order for our brains to be healthy, we need to make sure they are getting the treatment and care they deserve.
