Meditation On Exercise

It is true that in recovery we must work on the inside first. It won’t help us to obsessively exercise, dazzle ourselves up with makeup, jewelry, tattoos, piercings, expensive clothes, hair, tans, etc…while we rot on the inside. Vanity has led many addicts and alcoholics to dissatisfaction with themselves and others, which led to failed expectations and resentments, which led to the inevitable relapse.  This ego and pride filled person must work on their insides first before they go about trying to fix and control their outsides. What they don’t know is that they are slowly dying, and they are doing it clean and sober.

Why Keep Calm & Exercise Then?

Keep calm and exercise is about balance. It’s important to work on the inside, but it’s also important to stay healthy on the outside. If you have balance in your life between your recovery program, affairs outside the rooms, and in your daily exercise; you will find peace.  Exercising can be a wonderful tool in recovery when done in a healthy manner. This will help build a healthier lifestyle by building healthy eating habits and physical habits. When we exercise we release endorphins which help the body, we can also release tension and stress. We will gain more energy because we are not foolishly wasting it in unhealthy areas of our lives. We will be inclined to eat healthier because it’s difficult to work out while eating unhealthy foods, smoking cigarettes, and engaging in unbalanced sleeping habits. When we exercise our bodies and our minds, we found we grew more. When we didn’t want to exercise and we did it, we felt better. The same goes with meetings, steps, and our recovery. When we didn’t want to go to meetings, do steps, or help others we had to just do it! We saw that we always felt better after we did.

Exercise The Body, Mind, & Spirit

Many times addicts/alcoholics are either full of high energy where they don’t know what to do with it, or they are isolators and become increasingly lazy as the days go on. A good rule of thumb is, if you are doing anything in excess or trying to control circumstances in order to get what you want you may want to take another look at your motives. If our motives are pure, our actions will be too. If our actions are pure, our recovery is in shape.  Let healthy exercise habits become a part of your journey into building a stronger foundation for recovery so that your mind, body, and spirit are always full of positive energy and happiness. Keep calm and exercise on!
