Turn It Over

To God.

To Buddha.

To a Higher Power.

To the universe.

To a power greater than ourselves.

It doesn’t matter what you call your Higher Power, just as long as you know it’s not you.

As alcoholics and addicts we tend to create a mess out of our lives from our addiction. When we get clean and sober, it can sometimes take years to not only grow, but clean up the mess we have made. It can be easy for us to give up when it gets too hard, but we found a better way from those who have done this before. We found it was even easier to just give it up to a power greater.

Turning your life and care over to a power greater than  yourself

From my personal experience, giving it up is about as easy as I make it. In the same respect, it’s about as difficult as I make it, too. Sometimes I can give something up in a heartbeat and be free from worry, stress, resentment, anger, and fear. Other times, I hold on to it because it’s either too scary to let go and trust the process or because I am still trying to control the situation to best suite my needs. And then there are those times where I don’t even notice that I am holding on and need another alcoholic to bounce my thoughts of off.

See, I can’t do this alone. There are those divine inspirational times where I am able to let go through the power of prayer and meditation, but there are also those times when I don’t know what I am doing and just talking it out with another alcoholic, or support, helps me see the answer more clearly.

I also want to emphasize, that those times where I have fought to hold on and then let go have been some of the greatest growing experiences of my recovery. It not only helped me believe that recovery really works, but it helped me appreciate the life I have been given. Letting go and letting my Higher Power take charge has enabled me to be happy, joyous, and free. I think I’ll just go ahead and keep doing it and I hope you will join me.

Just for today, let’s turn it over to something greater than ourselves together.
