Meditation: Relax

When I first came into recovery my head was spinning. I was so stressed out and scared about everything and the mountain of problems seemed to overwhelm me. I kept wondering how I was ever going to be able to climb out of the whole I had dug myself – it seemed near impossible.

All my support would tell me the same thing – just go to meetings, work my program, mediate/prayer, and leave the rest up to my Higher Power. This seemed like a simple idea, but I was complicated and believed that it wouldn’t work for me. I just wanted to stop thinking so much. I wanted to stop living in fear.

As I continued on in my journey and took it one day at a time, I noticed something miraculous, I started to slowly relax. I can’t tell you when it happened, but all of a sudden I just didn’t take life so seriously. I started to trust and have faith in the process, and I started to believe in the promises that others in the rooms told me about. I started to believe, because for the first time, I saw real hope.

Most of us in recovery just want to be better now, but what is better anyway? If you are clean and sober today, than you are already better than when you were drunk or high. Recovery is a process and it takes time to heal and grow without drugs and alcohol. This all requires patience, no expectations, and trust that this will work if you put in the effort. The moment I stopped trying to control life was the moment I started to relax and enjoy it.

If I wanted to be happy and stop my head from spinning, I had to stop thinking so much about myself; I had to start thinking of others. When I think of others and what I can bring to the world and how I can contribute to this universe, I relax, because I see how much bigger life is than just me. This world does not revolve around me and nor should it. We are all sharing this beautiful space and my attitude is what will make my journey pleasant or not.

Today, Higher Power, please remove from me my obsessive thinking. Help direct my energy towards others and how I can be of service and helpful to my fellows so that I may relax a little. Thank you.
