Jonathan Rhys Meyers Story

Alcohol treatment

In 2005, it was reported that Jonathan Rhys Meyers checked into a rehabilitation facility seeking treatment for unspecified substance abuse. His rep confirmed two years later (in 2007) that Meyers did, in fact, enter an alcohol treatment program. That same year, when his mother died at the young age of 51, he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly and in breach of the peace at Dublin airport while he waited for his flight to attend the funeral services. Over the next few years, Meyers would find himself in and out of rehab again.

Meyers speaks out

In a November 2013 interview during the promotion of Dracula, Meyers opened up about his troubles and he wanted to put them behind him. “I was wild, I was as wild as you can get,” he said. “When you are on the front of newspapers for stupidity, getting drunk at airports, fighting with cops and stuff like that, you wake up the next day and you can hardly [expletive] remember it. Responsibility gets diminished.” He went on to say, “As you get older you see the stupid things you have done…I was able to come to that realization and I look for different things in life now…Now I don’t do nothing. Once you make the decision you have had enough of something, the decision is made you have had enough…” The last statement implies that he made the decision to stop using and abusing alcohol (and any other substances) and to turn his life around.

Recent shenanigans

Earlier this month, Jonathan Rhys Meyers was spotted stumbling around the streets of London, struggling to keep his eyes open, while carrying a bottle of vodka by his side. Wearing a stained grey tshirt and unbuttoned jeans, the unshaven star was seek pouring vodka into the bottle cap and drinking it in the middle of the street.

An apology

Meyers took to his fiancee Mara Lane’s Instagram account to issue an apology for his “minor relapse” saying, “I hope that people don’t think too badly of me…I am on the mend and thank well wishers and sorry for my disheveled appearance as I was on my way home from a friends and had not changed. I feel I made a mistake and feel quite embarrassed but this was just a blip in my recovery otherwise I’m living a healthy life.”
