How Binge Drinking Can Lead To Sexual Assault

Sharethis Watershed

Some people feel that drinking, even a little bit, can lower a person’s inhibitions and cause them to engage in activity that they would never even consider if they were sober. However, on college campuses around the country, this danger is amplified due to the amount of drinking some students engage in. Binge drinking can have very serious consequences for everyone, however, it especially problematic for young people who are away from home for the first time. As a new study shows, binge drinking causes college freshman to be up to 33% more likely to be sexually assaulted.

Sexual Assault

Unfortunately, sexual assault is fairly common around college campuses. Normally when a person is assaulted, alcohol is involved in some way or form. It’s no secret that bars around colleges offer discounted, or even free, drinks to young girls who are out looking for a good time. However, many of them become so inebriated that they begin to make very poor decisions. Most men around college campuses know this fact all too well. Many are on the prowl looking for girls who have had one too many, and appear ready to make some bad decisions. If you go out on a weeknight or weekend in a college town, you will have no trouble finding a group of girls stumbling down the sidewalk looking for a great time.

A new study, done by the magazine Violence and Victims, states that female college freshman who consume at least four alcoholic beverages a week are 33% more likely to be involved in a sexual assault in the following months. This is a staggering percentage, as four drinks is considered not that many for most college freshman. This study was done by following freshman girls at the University of Georgia, which is in the Southeastern conference.

The study looked at 200 girls over the course of their first year on campus. Researchers monitored the drinking behavior of these girls, and then interviewed them one-on-one to find out how their year went. It was discovered that 17% of those girls who binge drank experienced at least one sexual assault during their first year. This is compared to 6% who did not binge drink. It’s not so much the amount of alcohol that these girls are drinking, but the rate at which they drink it that puts them at increased risk for sexual assault.

This study emphasized the fact that the victims were not necessarily to blame, only that it was evident that girls who were prone to binge drink were putting themselves at a much higher risk of having something bad happen to them. When kids get on campus for the first time, many are away from home for the very first time in their lives. They are excited to participate in all of the fun activities that college life has to offer. Unfortunately, too many kids associate college life with drinking, and since they are not used to having so much freedom, many overdo it. This was the main purpose of the study, to prove to young women that if they binge drink, they are statistically much more likely to be assaulted at some point during their first year. Young women need to be better educated about the risk they take when they consume too much alcohol too quickly. They need to understand that there are predators that are counting on them being drunk and willing to compromise their safety. By making the findings of this study more publicized, hopefully girls on college campuses will become more aware of the dangers binge drinking presents. If you or someone you know has a problem with binge drinking, it is important that they seek counseling at a reputable alcohol addiction rehab.
