happy first day of summerIt’s official – summertime has arrived.  Happy first day of summer!  A change of season can mean more than just a shift in the temperature.  When one season ends and another one begins, it can show people like you as an alcoholic and/or addict in the process of recovery how change is possible – though sometimes it may occur quickly while other times it may seem to be happening slowly.

How can you as an alcoholic and/or addict start fresh this season and celebrate a happy first day of summer 2015?  There are plenty of ways you can dust the past off the winter blues and get rid of the spring fever to have some serious summer lovin’!

Cookouts and Barbecues

What could be a better way to kick off summer than a good, old-fashioned cookout?  Invite your sober network of supports to a local park or your home and tell everyone to bring a special treat!  It’s a great way for you to fellowship by reaching out to everybody and celebrating the change of season together.  When you were active in your disease, you probably wanted to isolate in misery and selfishness.  Now with summer  here, you can all get together in company with one another to rejoice.

Picnic

Another fun way to get going with your summer spirit is to grab a basket, blanket, and grab some friends on your way as you find the ideal spot for a picnic!  There’s nothing quite like a summertime lunch on the green grass in the shade of a beautiful sunny day..  Moments like these you might not have been able to appreciate when you were active in your disease, drinking and/or abusing drugs, but now that you are clean and sober with a fresh pair of eyes, you can view seasons like summer with an entirely different perspective.  Suddenly, the sky may look a little bluer and clearer while the sun is a little brighter.

Go for a Swim

Whether you choose to go in the ocean, lake, or pool, be sure to head into some type of water to swim this summer!  It’s a great way for a recovering alcoholic and/or addict to get outside of themselves.  Swimming is a healthy way to exercise and a fun social activity to partake in with friends during summer.

So how will you be having a happy first day of summer?  Summer can be a wonderful season to enjoy, but it is important to keep in mind how a change of seasons holds additional significance for your recovery.
