Florida CVS: Narcan

CVS announced this past May that they would allow the purchase of Narcan (generic name: Nalaxone) in seven additional states, Florida being one of them. Twenty-three states to date have the overdose drug available without prescriptions at different CVS locations, but Florida, until recently, still required a prescription. This is the first step among many to help combat the growing drug problem in America.

“Expanding access to the overdose-reversal drug naloxone is a critical part of our national strategy to stop the prescription drug and heroin overdose epidemic – along with effective prevention, treatment, and enforcement,” said Michael Botticelli, director of National Drug Control Policy.

Important things you should know about Narcan

If you or someone you love is abusing drugs, then you should have Narcan on hand. Waiting to buy the drug until an overdose can prove to be life-threatening and in some cases, may be too late. Once the person has received Narcan, it is crucial to take them to the emergency room immediately because once it wears off, severe withdrawal will occur and another overdose is likely.

The best thing to do when someone overdoses, is to call 911. Overdoses caused by fentanyl or carfentanil exposure will be harder to reverse, and often require multiple administrations of the overdose-reversal drug.

Although Narcan can be lifesaving, it is not the solution to the opioid drug epidemic our nation is facing. It is merely a band aid until further action can be taken. Drug rehab programs along with a 12-Step recovery fellowship are favored for those suffering from a drug abuse problem. Long-term recovery is possible and there are over 22 million people in the U.S. today that are living proof of that.

If you, or someone you love, feel that recovery is impossible, contact us today at 1-800-861-1768 to learn how you too can recover from the disease of addiction. Recovery is possible and we can help.
