Fear of Friday the 13th: Let Go of Irrational Thoughts

Sharethis Watershed

friday-the-13thDo you have a fear of Friday the 13th?  If you do, you’re not alone – there’s even a word for it: friggatriskaidekaphobia. It’s derived from a mix of Norse and Greek words that translate to “Friday,” “thirteen,” and “fear.”  Now it makes a little more sense, right?  (Try saying it three times fast – we dare you to try!)

Understanding Fear of Friday the 13th

With all the superstitions surrounding your fear of Friday the 13th, it may become challenging to just step outside your front door on this dreaded day.  An estimate of about 17-21 million Americans suffer from a fear of Friday the 13th, according to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina.  It can be a particularly difficult day for those who have a tough time with general fears and letting go of them, which can often be the case if you’re additionally dealing with an alcohol and/or drug addiction.

Let go of fears and irrational thoughts

Breaking your fear of Friday the 13th may be overwhelming at first, but once you get past this irrational thought, you can live in the present moment and enjoy the day.  Irrational fears prevent you from being in the moment.  By preventing yourself from living in the moment, you cheat yourself out of experiences.  You become deprived of real life human experiences and rob yourself, as well as others, of time you both could be enjoying that you can’t get back.  Letting go of fears is a beautiful aspect to life that each person deserves the pleasure of experiencing.

It might be hard to believe, but you can get rid of your fears. Realistically, it probably won’t happen overnight; it’s a process that won’t come naturally, or even quickly. Letting go of fears happens gradually, which is okay.  A good piece of advice would be to “act” your way into changing your behavior and changing your thinking.  If you want to let go of your fears, but you are unsure of how to do so, then start with the basics.  First, you were living in fears, so start by moving forward, looking at the fear, and being aware of it.  You’ll know later how to let go of it over time because obsessing over it won’t do you or anyone else any justice.  Instead, throw yourself into helping others.

Seeing the numbers 666

If you see the numbers “666” today, don’t run in fear.  These numbers shouldn’t shape your day any more or less.  Try your best to go about your day as you would normally, and if you end up purchasing an item at the store that totals $6.66, consider it a strange coincidence. Don’t over think or obsess!

Walking under a ladder

You could avoid ladders all day long in hopes that this will keep you from acquiring bad luck, but logically walking under a ladder by mistake shouldn’t significantly impact your day.
