driving under the influenceWith the 4th of July on its way, there’s always a fear of being caught on the road with people who are driving under the influence.  July 4th is actually one of the most dangerous days of the year, so let’s get armed with the facts and try to prevent DUI accidents this year.

Driving Under the Influence Facts

In 2009, over the 4th of July weekend, for individuals under the age of 21, 942 emergency room visits were alcohol-related.  The following year resulted in 392 deaths due to car collisions. Out of those incidents, 39% of drivers had a blood alcohol concentration level (BAC) of .08 or greater.  You can be arrested for driving under the influence with a BAC level over .08! Knowing these kind of numbers, it’s suggested during any holiday to not travel unless absolutely necessary and stay in one safe place during celebration.

Celebrating 4th of July Safe

Enjoying July 4th should be about celebrating freedom, not living in fear. So, what can you do to make sure that you are acting safely, and be aware of other people on the road who may be driving under the influence?  This holiday, hold yourself accountable by surrounding yourself with a positive group of people.  You may not have control over other people’s actions on the road, but you are able to make your own positive choices.  Be smart – don’t drink and drive.  Don’t let others drink and drive.  If you know someone is drinking, don’t let them drive and make sure there’s a designated driver.  Nothing could ruin a 4th of July celebration quite like an emergency room visit, car accident, or someone getting hurt.

Remember there are safe ways to celebrate Independence Day that don’t require drinking alcohol.  Why not eat some delicious barbecue, watch a parade, or visit your local fireworks display? These are the perfect activities for the holiday, and you can gather with your loved ones to enjoy the festivities.
