Soberoo: Drug & Alcohol Free Zone At Bonnaroo

Sharethis Watershed

Bonnaroo is back and so is Soberoo. Soberoo is a safe, drug and alcohol free zone for those in recovery who love music. This year, you can find Soberoo’s lounge area, marked by yellow balloons, across from the meeting tent behind the gates. Soberoo also engages in daily 12-step meetings for those who favor support groups. Just because you may not do drugs or drink alcohol, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the music and festivities. It’s important for those in early recovery to have support and have a solid program of recovery while attending festivals such as Bonnaroo. If you do not feel comfortable going, the best thing you can do for yourself is simply not go – there is always next year.

What Is Bonnaroo?

Bonnaroo has grown to become one of the biggest music festivals in the United States over the last 13 years.  Each year tens of thousands of people descend upon a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee for a four-day, multi-stage music and entertainment festival.  This year, the event runs from June 12-15, and features dozens of bands and musicians, as well as several well known comedians and entertainers.  The festival celebrates almost every genre of music and some highlights this year include: Elton John, Kanye West, Jack White, Lionel Richie, and several other artist will also be performing.  Bonnaroo is not only known as one of the biggest and best annual music festivals in the country, but also one of the most substance-heavy events of the year.  This can make it difficult for people in recovery to enjoy the event without feeling the pressure of temptation to use drugs or alcohol. Luckily, some organizers of Bonnaroo have found a great way to address this problem and make the event as fun and accessible to everyone by designating a special tent called Soberoo.

Soberoo Gives Recovering Addicts A Safe Haven

Soberoo is a drug and alcohol free zone at Bonnaroo, specifically catering to the needs of recovering addicts.  It is a large meeting tent located in Centeroo (near the entrance of Planetroo and the Clean Vibes merch tent) and is staffed 24 hours a day. Here, like minded people in recovery can come to attend meetings, or even just to relax away from the craziness for a little while to clear their mind.  Soberoo has several scheduled meetings throughout the days where individuals can share experiences and help one another avoid the temptation of using drugs or alcohol.  Soberoo is not strictly for AA or NA members, and is freely available to anyone who is seeking a drug and alcohol free area.

Best Practice Dictates Avoiding Temptation

While Soberoo is an excellent resource to individuals who really feel the need to be a part of Bonnaroo, the best way to avoid temptation is to not go to the festival at all.  Bonnaroo is known for being one of the substance-heaviest events in the United States and should be avoided by anyone who can’t trust themselves to stay on the path to recovery.  If you do go to Bonnaroo and start to feel the temptation to use drugs or alcohol, the volunteers at the Soberoo tent will be there to help you get through the festival. Soberoo will be located at Centeroo this year and should not be too difficult to find (look for the tent with the large yellow balloons).  If you or someone you love is struggling with drug addiction or alcoholism, please contact The Watershed at 1-800-861-1768
