bondage-of-self“God, I offer myself to Thee- To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!” – Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, Third Step Prayer.

Bondage Of Self

Whether we like to believe it or not, many of us block our purpose and happiness through bondage of self. We get so wrapped up in our old ideas and beliefs that we don’t let go of control. Somehow we believe that if we continue to control this person, place, or thing, it will work out in our favor. The idea is that will get what we want, but the truth is that we really don’t know what we want or need in this life. We have a concept of what we want and if we really break it down, it’s called happiness and peace.

That car, house, partner, money, etc…all stems down to wanting to be happy, joyous, and free. What we find out as we continue to struggle to obtain and keep those things, is that they are not what gives us what we really want. It is after that battle to get and keep what want is lost , that we surrender and turn our will and our life over to our Higher Power. That is when begin to see the path to happiness that we were always meant to take. Surrender does not mean we give up our goals towards happiness, it means we give up our control of what is hurting us.

Just for today, I will turn over my will so that I can release the bondage of self.
