Recovering from Addiction: How to Be Your Best Self
It’s too easy to stay stuck in a bad mood or think negatively of your life by being a victim of your circumstance. Instead of letting yourself slip into self-pity and misery, you can re-shift your thinking and stray from your negative thinking patterns and behaviors. You can be the best version of you when you are open-minded, honest, and willing. Acceptance is a beautiful sensation because it allows you to not just come to terms with ideas, opinions, explanations, and realities, but also to embrace them. The concept of accepting yourself can be complex because you should love and accept yourself for who you are, but you should not use it as an excuse to continue with negative behaviors, such as continuing to use. Yes, addiction IS a disease but you do have the choice to seek help and get treatment for addiction. Learning to love and accept yourself in all phases of your life is VERY different than saying “I’m a drug addict and I can’t stop, so therefore, I must accept myself as is and continue using because that’s all I’ll ever be.” Instead, you can tell yourself that you do have a problem but are still capable of love and can recover from any addiction. This can even help you when you take your love and acceptance a step further by implementing real change.
Do the Next Right Thing
Whether recovering from addiction or in active addiction to drugs or alcohol, you can always work on your recovery. Doing the next right thing is a huge part of that because it means taking the necessary steps to do what you feel is right about a situation or event. There are going to be all types of difficult situations in life where you simply may just not know what the absolute, no-doubt right thing to do is. Using your best judgment, you may need to make some tough calls in life, like hanging out with certain people more or less, switching jobs, or sharing your opinion on a personal matter, which is why doing the next right thing is important. You may not always have the right answers, but you can always TRY your very best to do the next right thing.
Be committed to yourself, your health, your goals, and your life. In recovery, it’s easy to say, “I’ve got this,” but no one “has” whatever it may be.
