1. Falsely Believing You’re “All Fixed”
It’s not unusual for addicts and alcoholics to fall susceptible to believing that they are “fixed” or “cured” after they are able to put down substances for some period of time or after completing a rehab program. 2. Stressing Out Over Anything and Everything
Stress isn’t good for anybody, but it’s particularly negative for addicts and alcoholics in recovery from addiction. Experiencing stress and letting yourself worry when you don’t need to can lead you right back to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Try to avoid overreacting and don’t stress over the little things. It may be easier said than done, but if you stress too much, you are only hurting yourself. Try to recite positive affirmations and when you notice yourself talking down to yourself, try to redirect your inner thoughts.
4. Suppressing Your Emotions
When alcoholics and addicts suppress their emotions, they prevent themselves from feeling what they are truly feeling. It may even make them more susceptible to having one big episode where all the emotions spill out. This can push you right back into a negative head space and make you susceptible to an alcohol and/or drug relapse. Try to be honest and true to your feelings, so that you can learn to deal with them in a more healthy and effective manner.
