Eminem Celebrates 10 Years Sober
Which celebrity just celebrated being 10 years sober? You might know him by his stage name: Eminem. Grammy Award-winning Eminem, otherwise known by his birth name as Marshall Mathers, is no stranger to success. However, behind his success as a leading music artist was a drug addiction that he was able to overcome. On April 20, 2018, Eminem celebrated 10 years in recovery.
10 Years of Recovery for Eminem
“Celebrated my 10 years yesterday,” Eminem commented on a picture of him holding a recovery medallion to Instagram on April 21. Fans showed their admiration and joy for the leading rap sensation.
Understanding Eminem’s Drug Addiction
Eminem has been relatively vocal about his struggle with drug addiction over the years, where he shared that at his worst, he was taking dozens of painkillers a day. In a documentary afterward, Eminem described his addiction as “liking it more and more” but remained in denial of having a problem. “People tried to tell me that I had a problem,” Eminem stated. “I would say, ‘Get that f-ing person outta here.’ I’m not out there shooting heroin. I’m not out there f-ing putting coke up my nose. I’m not smoking crack.” Eminem described how he justified his drug addiction and believed it to be not as “bad” when compared to what he always assumed an addiction was. But the reality is that a drug addiction can occur with any and all substances. It is characterized by repetitive use as well as an inability to stop and having an obsession over using the substance in spite of negative consequences.
Eminem’s Moment of Change
In 2007, Eminem suffered a methadone overdose. “The doctors told me I’d done the equivalent of four bags of heroin,” he explained. “Had I got to the hospital about two hours later, I would have died.” The tragedy shook Eminem. “They didn’t think I was gonna make it. My bottom was gonna be death.” While Eminem, promised himself he would never return to drugs, he later revealed that he relapsed a month after the incident, proving that consequences aren’t enough to deter an addict who is hooked on drugs. Eminem claimed that he underwent an extreme detox, but was committed to getting and staying clean for his kids. Eminem spoke about his detox and experience entering recovery, “It does get better.”
It really does get better. Congratulations to Eminem for being 10 years sober after his drug addiction! Recovery takes hard work, and there may be setbacks, but it is definitely worth it.
