Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys
Ever find yourself smack dab in the middle of other people’s garbage only to wonder what the heck happened and how it became your problem, too? We have all done it. Many times it is because we care too much, while other times it might be because we love a little too much chaos in our lives. Either way, it’s toxic for us and we need to find healthier ways to help others, without hurting ourselves. Here are some questions I like to ask myself before I dive head first into saving the world, helping others, or fixing stuff.
Before I get involved:
- Does this have anything to do with me or is it my business?
- What is my motivation surrounding this issue?
- What do I have to lose if I involve myself?
- Am I helping or hurting by inserting myself?
- Am I enabling or supporting?
There have been many times I have gotten dragged into a situation that honestly had nothing to do with me and I couldn’t even fix if I wanted to. It was someone else’s battle, struggle, life to live. It was there trial and tribulation to work on with their higher power. So often I want to fix things and make everyone happy that I forget that I am not God and this is not my journey to work on. We can show support to others without enabling or creating more chaos in our own lives as well as theirs.
Just for today: I will not take on the burdens of others. I will allow other people, places, and situations to be exactly how they are meant to be without my say. Why? Because, not my circus, not my monkeys.
