Alisan Porter, ‘Curly Sue’ Star and Recovered Alcoholic, Wins ‘The Voice’
Former childhood star, Alisan Porter, best known for her role as Curly Sue in the 1991 film, shocked judges and the nation with her flawless performance on The Voice.
During the competition, Porter opened up about her struggles with alcohol and where her recovery has taken her.
Alisan Porter The Voice
“Honestly, I was going through a hard time in life. I got sober almost eight years ago,” Alisan vulnerably shared on The Voice. “I fell in love and I had children. That was my goal, to just be a good mom. And I really feel like the universe just had a plan for me because you guys turned for me today.”
She not only nailed the blind audition with an almost immediate four-chair turn, she won The Voice! Instead of judgments or shame being thrown her way for publicly admitting she had a problem with alcohol, Alisan was embraced with loving words from the judges, as well as the nation.

Alisan Porter got sober on October 28, 2007. She is a shining example of what recovery can do for any addict or alcoholic who is struggling. Her amazing performance in her eighth year of sobriety shows us that dreams can come true, and although they may not happen right away, as long as sobriety is put first, they can still happen. Congrats, Alisan, for your success on stage and in recovery!
