Have you seen the new 2016 Budweiser Super Bowl ad? Helen Mirren, a seasoned actress who described herself as, “a notoriously frank and uncensored British lady,” is this year’s Budweiser PSA spokesperson. The goal is to get drivers to not drink and drive, but also to #GiveADamn about their lives and others. When you watch the commercial – did they miss the mark?

Drunk driving is reckless, selfish, and endangers lives. But are insults the best way to keep drunken people off the streets? After almost 20 years of experience in treating addiction, we know there’s a better way.
First off, the, “I am better than you and you are stupid” approach that this Budweiser Super Bowl ad uses rarely ever works with anyone. So, here are the raw facts about drunk driving prevention.
Drunk driving is 100% preventable. Over 10,000 people died from drunk driving crashes in 2013 according to the CDC. Of those 10, 000 deaths,over a 1,000 were kids. The most at-risk people for drunk driving fatalities are young people, motorcyclists, and drivers who have prior DUI’s (which is also a strong indicator that you may be suffering from an alcohol abuse problem). Does this mean everyone else is safe and won’t drink and drive? No. So do your part – be aware of your actions and simply don’t drive drunk.
How can you prevent yourself from driving drunk?
Have a designated driver. Or, if you don’t have one, call a cab or an Uber to start – and especially end – your night. You are less likely to drive home drunk if you don’t even have your keys. The best way to prevent a drunk driving accident is to simply be prepared. Alternative rides home or to other destinations will help keep you and the roads safe.
What to do if you are a blackout drunk, or think you can handle your booze and drive?
Many drunk drivers also suffer from the deadly disease of alcoholism. This means a good portion of drunk drivers hitting the road may also be in a blackout state and not even know that they are driving, or at the very least, think they are more sober than they actually are. For an alcoholic, just saying no isn’t likely, and being scolded isn’t enough to discourage drunk driving. The best prevention to keep a person who struggles with alcohol off the roads, is to get them help at a local 12-step program or rehab.
In short, instead of Budweiser hiring an actress to berate potential drunk drivers, the more effective approach would be to address the issue of treating alcoholism and alcohol abuse on this very public Super Bowl stage.
