How To Stay Clean And Sober During Christmas
Christmas is relatively stressful for most people, but for the alcoholic and/or addict early in recovery, it can be crippling. Here are some suggestions that might help you remain cool, calm, and collected this holiday season. Remember, it’s only a short distance between now and New Year’s, so don’t give up over just a feeling, thought, or bad day(s). This too shall pass.
Stay Clean And Sober
Meditation is a great way to handle stress and get connected to your Higher Power and yourself. There are many ways to meditate, so don’t think you have to stick to just one. Some people find meditation through exercise or yoga, others through books or art, and some even find it in sleep or rest. There are many ways to meditate, so play around and find out what works best for you.
Support from a therapist, spiritual adviser, and/or other recovering alcoholics and addicts are important on any given day, but especially during the holiday season. Make sure you are reaching out and sharing your thoughts with those supports. If nobody knows what is going on with you, they won’t be able to help you through it. Short and simple, reach out and be honest about how you feel. Don’t forget to take suggestions from your support either. It might just save your butt.
Giving your time and helping others is one of the most uplifting things you can do as a human being, not just an addict or alcoholic. By helping others you are actually helping yourself. It’s a great way to distract yourself from thinking about your personal woes too much. It also feels really good to be of service and is one of the best ways to get through trials and tribulations in life.
Remember to be patient with yourself and others. The holidays should be about joy and happiness, but it’s OK if it’s not. Be patient and know that this too shall pass, and the way you feel now will not last forever. Keep pushing through because you never know what amazing things are waiting for you. No matter what, don’t give up!
