We Support Selena Gomez For Chemo, But Not Rehab
Selena Gomez Lupus? In 2014 there was a rumor spreading that Selena Gomez was in rehab for drug addiction. Recently the news broke that she was actually receiving chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lupus. Now the world feels sorry for her because the common misconception is that addiction is a choice and cancer is not. We as a nation are doing something wrong when we shame others for getting help for the disease of addiction, but will praise those who fight the disease of cancer.
Selena Gomez Lupus
Anyone suffering from any kind of disease is heartbreaking in itself, but there should not be one disease that is more acceptable to recover from over another. This is the unfortunate stigma that plagues our nation and prevents addicts and alcoholics from getting proper treatment. Who wants to go to rehab when people have such a nasty, negative view about it? Who wants to admit to anyone that they have the disease of addiction when the media reports addiction like it’s a moral failing or a bad choice?
One commenter even stated on the Buzzfeed article Facebook post, “Wow. Imagine all these people speculating about you like you’re an addict or ‘broken’ by a relationship, and really you’re fighting for your life,” Suggesting that addicts and alcoholics don’t fight for their lives. When in reality every 4 minutes someone is dying from alcohol or drugs in America. This is the equivalent of 350 people dying in a plane crash every day as stated by Unite To Face Addiction.
Addiction Is A Disease That Kills, Too
The disease concept of drug addiction and alcoholism is not new nor a theory – it’s a fact. Don’t believe us? Check it out for yourself: The disease of addiction and alcoholism.
On an interview with Billboard magazine, Selena states “I was diagnosed with Lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke. I wanted so badly to say: ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
Again, why should Selena have to defend her right for any kind of treatment for any kind of health issue? If she were in rehab for drugs, does that somehow make her illness less than in your eyes? I think we need to show support to anyone who is trying to recover from any kind of illness. It takes courage, patience, and hope to continue on the path of recovery. Let us remember that each person is struggling with their own battles and it is not up to us to judge them, because you never know if you or someone you love will have to face these very same battles.
Rehab is not a prison sentence and addicts/alcoholics are not bad people trying to get good, they are sick people trying to get well. No person should ever feel shamed or ridiculed for getting the treatment they deserve.Tags: celebrity addiction, celebrity news, stigma of addiction
