Stand For Something
It can become real easy to not stand up for yourself or your beliefs while trying to work a good program of recovery. Sometimes, we are so willing, honest, and open-minded to be patient, understanding, loving, and tolerant that we can slowly turn into a doormat for some people. This can ultimately feed our fear, which can lead to low self-esteem and self-worth. So, what can we do about it?
Stand up for yourself!
There is nothing wrong with standing by a belief or boundary you have. I have, on many occasions, stood by certain beliefs that I feel are needed in my life in order to be happy, healthy, and free. It’s important to remember that we can stand by a belief and stand up for ourselves without being vicious or inconsiderate of others, too.
The other person or persons may not agree with what I am doing or saying, but that doesn’t mean that I am at fault or are to blame. I am simply standing by a set of principles that I feel are important to me. Does this mean I go out of my way to hurt others? No, of course not and for the most part I am a pretty happy and considerate person. It just means that I do not have tolerate people being rude, inconsiderate, and unkind to me. I can stand up for myself.
I didn’t get sober to become a doormat or to allow others to abuse me. Recovery has taught me to let go of the things I can’t control while allowing me to be strong in moments when I may feel weak – like confrontation when someone has overstepped my boundaries. Sometimes it takes some practice at it, but I have found that the stronger my relationship is with my Higher Power and the more I practice principles in all my affairs, the easier it can be for me to face confrontation without total fear. Not all confrontation is bad and we are not bad people for loving ourselves enough to not take abuse from someone else.
Just for today, love yourself enough to stand up for what you believe!
