Kim Richards: Addiction Is Real
Season 5 of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills brought speculation of Kim Richards’ addiction back into the public eye. Though she insisted she was sober, her erratic throughout the season, coupled with an admission to taking one of her ex-husband’s pain pills, proved otherwise.
A history of abuse: Kim Richards
In seasons’ past of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Richards discussed her addition openly. Her battle with alcohol addiction and her previous rehab stints were no secret. On this most recent season however, she was adamant (to the point of verbal and near-physical assault of other cast-mates) that she has been sober for three years.
Arrested for public intoxication
On April 16, Kim Richards was arrested for a misdemeanor and taken into custody after an alleged fight around 2:00 a.m. at the Beverly Hills Hotel. According to US Weekly, Richards was at dinner with friends in the Polo Lounge. Later, once her friends left, an eyewitness said she became loud and was yelling and laughing at other people. Bartenders at the hotel tried to escort her out, but she wouldn’t budge. Once security was called, she hid in the bathroom and would not come out.
Security called the police about Richards’ behavior, who reportedly exhibited slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. According to reports, Richards kicked a police officer while at the Beverly Hills Police Station, where she was charged with trespassing, public intoxication, resisting an officer and battery on a peace officer.
A sitdown with Dr. Phil
Following her arrest, Richards sat down with Dr. Phil McGraw for an exclusive interview. She came clean about her ongoing battle with alcoholism as of recent, claiming she was driven to drink because of estranged family issues. She also admitted that the night of her arrest wasn’t the first time she had broken her sobriety. “I did have drinks a couple of other times over the past few months,” said Richards. “It was wine and I was ashamed to say anything at the reunion, embarrassed.”
Following the interview, Richards checked herself into rehab. This is the right first step in any recovery process. If you or someone you know is showing signs of addiction, don’t wait to get help.
