Motivational Meditation Monday: Keep Calm & Let Haters Hate
Hater (Hate-er) noun: Someone who is incapable of being happy for another person’s success. Rather than being happy, they make a point of exposing a flaw in that person. They hate themselves and don’t even know it.
Let the haters hate, because my life is great!
You know that feeling when you enter a room and see people whisper and you think it’s about you? You end up talking to your sponsor and they may say something like, “Not everyone is thinking about you,” or, “The world does not revolve around you.” But sometimes… sometimes those haters are talking about you and it can really hurt.
As I have grown in my sobriety, so has my ability to accept things for being exactly the way they are. That includes accepting that not all people are going to like me, and not everyone is going to say nice things about me, or even to me. Haters are gonna hate, regardless. The trick is to not let them get to you.
So how does one do that, exactly?
What people think or say about me is none of my business. It does not define who I am, nor does it define how I feel about myself. If I think I am attractive, caring, smart, funny, and try my best to be a better person each day, then that is what I am. In the great words of Eminem, “I am whoever I say I am!”
What I think (say to myself) reflects on my emotions, which in return reflects on my actions, which is just a picture of what I think of myself. See how that cycle works? Self-talk is just as important as the actions I take. If I want to have good self-esteem and not let the haters get to me, then I must think good things about who I am as a person.
Let me perfectly clear, if I haven’t already, what someone says or thinks about you cannot control you if you don’t want it to or let it. If what someone says is not beneficial, kind, motivating, truthful and necessary, then it is not worth your time thinking about it. That hater who just spit their venom at you really hates themselves and you were just in the way of their anger and misery. It is as simple as that. When a person is mean towards others it only speaks of their character, not yours.
So, for all those haters out there, we’re going to take a moment of silence for you today because we know how much it hurts to be sick and suffering.
