Chester Hanks Gets Clean
Chester Hanks (a.k.a. Chet Haze), the oldest son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, announced in late November via Instagram that he’d recently gone to rehab for cocaine addiction and that he’d reached nearly two months of sobriety.
“I have an announcement”
On November 19, in an apparent decision to get in front of a sensationalist story, Chet took to social media to reveal his addiction problems to the world.
“I have an announcement,” his video admission begins. “A tabloid is about to run a piece on me being in rehab for cocaine addiction.”
Watching the video, at first it seems as though he may launch a defensive speech about the forthcoming tabloid story. But in a somewhat surprising move, he makes a bold proclamation and admits that the story is factual.
“It’s true,” he continues. “And I’m currently 50 days clean and sober from everything – including alcohol.”
In the video’s caption, Hanks goes on to explain that his addiction problems are not a new development.
“I’ve been struggling with substance abuse since I was 16 years old. Finally at the age of 24 I decided to get some help. With 50 days of sobriety under my belt, I can honestly say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.”
A new life, sober
Cocaine, Chet’s admitted drug of choice, is a powerful stimulant with a high propensity for addiction. In fact, it’s estimated that cocaine creates one of the strongest psychological dependences of any drug – second only to methamphetamine. Even still, with the right help and intervention, the body and the brain are very capable of overcoming this kind of dependence. What waits on the other side is a whole new life.
After getting through initial detox, most recovering addicts discover that – despite their previous notions – the sober life turns out to be a truly happy, peaceful life. But it’s certainly not a magic potion, and it’s not a one-time project. Sobriety is a lifelong journey, and every day counts. This is a lesson Chet seems to be taking in stride so far.
Sobriety, as he has discovered, is not simply a matter of giving up your preferred substance, but rather ridding your life of all substances. As he mentioned in his Instagram announcement, Chet is “sober from everything – including alcohol.”
