Motivational Meditation Monday: Keep Calm & Tell The Truth
There are only two people who can tell you the truth about yourself – an enemy who has lost his temper and a friend who loves you dearly. – Antisthenes
The Truth Will Set You Free
Being honest really stinks at times, especially when you know the truth will hurt. Sometimes we try to keep things to ourselves because we love those around us so much that we just can’t handle them seeing our flaws. Other times we lie because we don’t want to deal with the consequences of what the truth will bring. The only problem with that is that most times our secrets make us sick and we do things and act in ways we never would normally do. This is why the truth (although difficult) will set you free.
Nobody likes being lied to and when those we love find out we have lied to them, they feel betrayed and hurt. What we may not know at the time is that we also end up hurting ourselves when we lie. We tend to not trust others or often feel anxious and unsettled. The kind of feeling that only makes our stomachs turn – guilt. We feel this way because we know in our hearts that what we are doing is based on self, fear, and lack of faith. When we try to control our stories or our lives, we are basically easing our Higher Power out of the picture and compulsively living on self-will. Usually this behavior blows up in our face and the truth comes out with or without our permission.
When we run on fear and try to control life and the people in it through lies, it never seems to turn out the way it is supposed to. It almost feels like the walls are closing in on us and our secrets have now taken over our actions and those around us. All this does is create even more chaos and confusion. We can see here that our decisions to lie have placed us in a position to hurt others and ourselves. When we are faced with this crossroad we are given two options, we either continue the lies and chaos or we tell the truth.
The amazing thing about telling the truth is not what you say as much as how you say it. Whenever we share our truths with others, it’s important to share it in such a way that will cause as little harm as possible. The truth may still hurt, but the deceit can be worst. A few things to remember before telling the absolute truth, pray about it and talk with a sponsor (spiritual advisor or trusted friend) before you just spill all your “stuff” on others. This way you can be confident in what you are sharing and you will cause less harm in the long run. Those who love you will be more appreciative of you being honest with them rather than keeping them in the dark and lying. Have a little faith, you may be surprised at just how freeing the truth is and how much stronger your relationships can become.
