Help Prevent Suicide
This week kicks off National Suicide Prevention Week (September 8th – 12th, 2014) and it couldn’t have come at more crucial time with the most recent tragic loss of comedian actor Robin Williams. Mental health issues do not discriminate and there are millions of Americans, from all walks of life, that are suffering in silence. By raising awareness and helping those struggling, we not only will see a brighter future for our nation, but we will help smash the stigma that is costing people their lives – literally.
I remember being so lost, confused, and depressed when it came to living the life as a drunk. I couldn’t even tell anymore if I was suffering from alcoholism, anxiety, depression, or the like there of. There was a time where I saw no light at the end of the tunnel and was scared of what was going to happen to me. This I would imagine is what many addicts and alcoholics in active addiction may feel like. I was fortunate enough to have support and get treatment so that I could recover, but there are still many others that need our help.
When depression and addiction strike, it can sometimes be too much for one person to handle on their own. The negative feelings and thoughts seem to overshadow any other rational thought, and in more serious cases the ultimate action is made, taking one’s life. There are ways to prevent suicide and it may be something as simple as recognizing when someone has a problem and needs your help.
Being part of the recovery community (or knowing someone who is), many of us have had our fair share of interventions, so knowing the signs are crucial when trying to help others.
