Motivational Meditation Monday: Keep Calm and Run
“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” – Haruki Murakami, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running
Keep Calm & RUN
As we enter recovery and start living a life abstinent from drugs and alcohol we may have noticed that our thinking is very active. We may fear the future and regret the past. Our present is filled with anger, self-pity, and sadness. On some occasions we find ourselves laughing and enjoying the moment, but then that fear starts to take over again. Our obsessive thinking seems to crowd out all other voices of hope, joy, and happiness. In some cases we just want to run.
For most of us it felt like an easier choice to run from our treatment, problems, and others. The down side to running is that we realized that wherever we went, there we were. Our supports might have gone away, but our problems were going to stay lingering unless we did something different. Instead of running away, why hadn’t we thought of running into recovery?
What if we took that same energy and placed it into our recovery program? We can certainly run into the solution and dive right into healing, and recovering from the disease of addiction. Running away would then not even become an option, because we would be so far deep into our program of recovery that any other way would be uncomfortable. How do we know this? Because this has been true for many recovering addicts and alcoholics who have since left addiction to live a life clean and sober.
Today, I am going to run into the solution. I am going to stick this thing out because others have told me that it has worked for them. Giving up and going back out is not an option. When I think I can’t, I will rely on the program, my sober supports, and my Higher Power. I will trust the process because I know that any other road besides the road to recovery, will lead me back to my addiction. I will not run from my new life. I will live happy, joyous, and free. I will recover.
If you can’t believe, believe that we believe until you can!
