Keep Calm: Stop To Smell The Roses
I came into the office this morning and discovered a piece of paper that had been placed under my door on the floor. I first thought it was just another piece of business that I needed to attend to later. As I went to go throw it on a pile of papers, I decided to take a quick peak. It was a poem about crack cocaine. An employee, and former Alumnus of The Watershed Texas, had written it when she was in treatment. I thought I would share it with all of you.
Obituary: Crack Cocaine
Crack cocaine died yesterday from a clear mind. She was a member of a f***ed up thinking system. She is survived by triggers and urges.
At this time of her death she was working on becoming a slave master. She will be remembered for destroying lives.
She will be mourned by no one because of the chaos she caused. The world will suffer loss because of her contributing in the area of murder, suicide, and overdoses.
She always wanted but never got to kill everyone she comes in contact with. The body will be kept on ice for eternity.
Flowers may be sent nowhere.

Hurry Up and Wait Already
How true it is that most of us have rushed by life waiting for that moment where we could be happy. What we didn’t know is that the moment we made a decision to recover, and do the work to continue to recover, was the very moment we could find happiness. This poem struck me hard, because sometimes it’s easy to forget how much addiction does and what it did to me. If I sit here long enough I can clearly remember my bottom and all the pain, anger, fear, and total torture it was. I then find myself immediately turning to the life I have been given and feel grateful that I am clean and sober and no longer suffering from the beast that is addiction.
This poem, and the woman who wrote it, inspires me to remember to stop and smell the roses, appreciate those around me, be grateful for all that I have, and love myself and others with all my heart. I am reminded to be patient and understanding when I feel like life doesn’t go my way. To remember that the time I have is a gift and that how I share it with the world is up to me. Do I wish to be happy today or do I wish to be miserable? How I feel affects those around me and ultimately, it affects how I live. Today I want to live freely. Today I chose to stop, smell the roses, and be happy.
