Motivational Meditation Monday: Keep Calm and Cinco De Mayo

It’s no secret that people like to celebrate this holiday by partying at local hot-spots, and for the early recovering alcoholic/addict, this can be a tough day. For those who have not fully worked a program of recovery, celebrations like Cinco De Mayo can feel like horrific triggers, but it doesn’t have to be like this forever.
I can only speak from my experience, but when I sat in my pity-pot feeling sorry for myself and angry that I was an alcoholic/addict, I had a tendency of relapsing. When I finally surrendered to the idea of recovery and took certain steps towards healing, I no longer had to deal with “triggers” or even fought the idea of not picking up a drink or a drug, the problem was just removed. I didn’t even think about drinking or using, and to me that was a miracle. The first year was more about getting comfortable without partying like I used to, and then it just became second nature to not want to drink at every occasion after sometime in recovery. I found a new way to celebrate every holiday and today, almost five years later, this way to celebrate is normal to me and the old way is very foreign.
If you are struggling over celebrating holidays sober and are not sure how to handle or deal with it, here are some suggestions that helped me through my first Cinco De Mayo and every other boozy holiday.
Party Sober Cinco De Mayo Style
Meeting – make sure you get to a meeting and share how you are feeling.
Talk to your sober support – let them know your fears and take suggestions on what works for them.
See if anyone in the sober community is having a BBQ – I bet you could even find someone at the meeting that is having one.
Make sure your day is planned out so that you do not have any free time to think too much.
Meditation and prayer – try exercise, yoga, meditation, and/or prayer to help balance your mood.
In the meantime, even if you only have a day, be of service to someone or somewhere. Being of service is an excellent way to get that exciting feeling of gratitude and is also a great way to get out of yourself and your fears. At the end of the day, today is just another day, so don’t think too much into it because we do this deal one day at a time.
