Motivation Meditation Monday: Keep Calm & Be Carefree
I would rather be happy, joyous, and free then worry about what you think of me. – Watershed Ashling
Most of us can remember that carefree attitude we had at some point as kids. The only responsibility you had was to make sure you got in enough cartoons, kickball, and spinning until you fell down. There was just this true sense of calm and peace and you knew it was going to be the best day ever. You wore what you wanted, you said what was on your mind, and you loved everyone without condition. This was about as carefree as we were ever going to get, until we entered recovery.
That carefree attitude sometimes seems to creep back in when some people go through a life changing event, like entering recovery from addiction. It’s not saying that we don’t care about people or how our actions are affecting others; it just means we are being carefree about worry and fear. Let’s be real, once you go through hell and make it out alive, you tend to not stress over the small stuff after a while. Being carefree can be one of the most exhilarating experiences one human being can obtain as an adult and you can be it today.
Try dancing like no one is watching, say hello with a bright smile to every cashier you encounter, wear that funky shirt you love but have hidden in the back of the closet because you don’t know where to wear it, and laugh as often and as loud as you can at something funny. Let yourself be free of that worry of what others will think, be free of that belief that everyone is out to hurt you, and let go of all those false ideas that you have to be this perfect person so that others will like you. You want to know what people really like? They like those who are authentic and genuine, so be real and carefree – be you.
I have found that the longer I stay sober the more aware I become of myself and who I am as a person. I would rather be happy, joyous, and free then worry about what you think of me. I would rather you spread laughter and creativity then worry about what I think of you. Let’s take a moment today to allow ourselves to be uniquely us and allow others to be uniquely them. Let that kid out and be carefree!
