Reflecting On 2013: Celebrities In Rehab
The year 2013 was a dramatic 12 months for many celebrities, with notable falls from grace, as well as some happier endings. This year’s headlines included everything from rehab check-ins and heartbreaking tragedies to confessions and celebrated recoveries.
Celebrities In Rehab: Amanda Bynes
Celebrity starlet Amanda Bynes had a particularly rough 2013, but it appears to be ending on a positive note. Bynes’ troubles began in 2012, starting first with a DUI accusation resulting from her sideswiping a West Hollywood police car. The actress continued to make headlines throughout 2013, including reports that she blew through $1.2 million in a few short months.
Her disturbed behavior eventually culminated with a startling event this July, in which she doused a driveway near her parents’ Thousand Oaks, California home in gasoline and lit it on fire. Following the incident, she was hospitalized, placed on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold and later admitted to an inpatient facility.
Court documents showed her parents were very concerned that Bynes was abusing alcohol and drugs, but more recent revelations indicate her erratic behavior may be attributed to mental illness. Either way, her rehab seems to be working and she was released from the inpatient facility earlier this month, with the condition that she continues weekly therapy. During the last week she was seen strolling the neighborhoods of Thousand Oaks with her mom and dad, and according to TMZ, has even enrolled in college.
Celebrities In Rehab: Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan has done six stints in rehab over the last several years, making her one of the most notorious names in the press. Following her most recent stretch, the troubled actress made her way to the confession hall of fame, so to speak: a sit-down with Oprah.
During her candid interview this past August, Lohan discussed her addictions to Adderall, alcohol and cocaine, as well as her recent sobriety, calmly calling her path of recovery a matter of “staying present and clear-headed and focused.”
Well-intentioned she may be, but the road to recovery has not proved an easy one for LiLo, who already made headlines just a few months after her Oprah interview. Although she claims she stayed away from the drugs and alcohol, earlier this month photos were published that showed what appeared to be remnants of marijuana joints and a cocaine baggy, purported party favors from a bash at the star’s Miami mansion.
2013 Celebrities In Rehab Recovery & Relapses
While Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan continue to fight their recovery battles, there were some in 2013 who sadly lost the fight. 2013 saw alcohol- and drug-related deaths of several celebrities, including Chris Kelly of 1990s rap duo Kris Kross; Cory Monteith, best known for his role on the Fox show Glee; Jeff Hannemen, guitarist for metal band Slayer; and Lisa Robin Kelly, of That 70s Show fame.
As evidenced by these 2013 stories, substance abuse and addiction can quickly spiral out of control. If you or a loved one is struggling, please contact The Watershed today. Our helpline is open 24/7: 1-800-861-1768.
