Because I Said I Would, founded by Alex Sheen, has inspired us to share these promise cards and New Years resolutions with our patients and Alumni at The Watershed this Holiday season. Addicts and alcoholics usually make many sweet promises to themselves, their families, and their communities. The Because I Said I Would movement has already been helping make all of these promises and New Years Resolutions come true. We thought we would share this opportunity to join the movement with our patients and Alumni. Our hope is that sharing their resolutions will help others in early in recovery, or those in need of treatment, keep those promises.
New Years Resolutions & Promise Cards
The Because I Said I Would viral video called, “I Killed A Man,” features Matthew Cordle speaking about how he killed Vincent Canzani in a drunk driving accident several months ago. His video has taught many viewers a valuable lesson, and has affected our recovery community of addicts and alcoholics. The Watershed Alumni and our patients all made their New Years resolutions because they said they would and also because they want to live a better life away from drugs and alcohol. Alcohol and drugs crush dreams, but because of treatment, they have a real chance at keeping these New Years resolutions. Some of the patients’ promises were very powerful:
I will make time for me (because I said I would)
I promise to finish my steps (because I said I would)
I promise to be a good mother (because I said I would)
I promise to work on boundaries (because I said I would)
I promise to leave my anger behind (because I said I would)
I promise to be more accepting of myself (because I said I would)
When The Watershed Alumni and patients wrote their New Years resolutions and promises on these cards, there was no necessary reason to ask why they were picking them; it was all over their faces. You can tell how much pain they’ve been through and where the disease of addiction had taken them. It’s very special to experience such strength, and to know that they are in a safe place for the holidays.
Drug & Alcohol Rehab Works
Because I Said I Would has greatly affected the addiction recovery community, and we hope that this will help addicts and alcoholics continue to keep their promises. What Matthew Cordle did was tragic, but his coming forward may really help other addicts and alcoholics refrain from driving under the influence, and hopefully seek the help they need before something like this happens.Tags: Addiction, alex sheen, because I said I would, holiday season, matthew cordle, new years resolutions, promise cards, stigma of addiction
