Motivational Meditation Monday: Keep Calm And Happy New Year
“Character is the ability to carry out a good resolution long after the excitement of the moment has passed.” – Cavett Robert
Keep Calm & Happy New Year Meditation
For many addicts and alcoholics, the New Year can be a terrifying time. How do you celebrate a holiday such as New Year’s without getting drunk or high? For those of us who have been in recovery for a little while, not obsessing over the holidays, like New Years, is nothing new. It’s almost second nature to not think about it. The focus is more on friends, family, and sober fun.
The New Year is just around the corner – what’s your 2014 New Year’s resolution?
Most of us who work a program of recovery found that these things just came automatically. In the beginning it was difficult, but we stuck by people who were practicing this way of life so that we could learn how to live clean and sober through all of life’s dealings, including the dreaded holidays. Much to our surprise, celebrating the holidays clean and sober is amazing.
Instead of thinking about self and how much the holidays stink and how horrible New Years is without drinking, why don’t we direct our attention and perception to something new. What’s your New Year’s resolution? What are some of the things you have always wanted to do, but never tried or could try because of your addiction? Now that we are in recovery, we can dream big and go after those dreams. If we can recover from alcohol and/or drugs, imagine what else we can do? The world is literally open to all these new and exciting opportunities just waiting for us to embrace.
For those of you who may still be struggling with letting go of people, places, things, or drugs and alcohol, there is hope and you can heal. Be willing to take the first step towards your recovery and just do it! You can recover too, but you have to take the action.
Just for today, dream big. Think about all the things you ever wanted to experience, try, or explore and do them! If you are clean and sober right now you have been given a gift – even if you don’t know it yet. Take that gift, open it up, and embrace life for the first time without fear. 2014 is your year to shine – take it on with a smile.
