Mayor Rob Ford, of Toronto, has been hitting headlines recently regarding the allegations of his crack abuse and alcoholism. As seen in our previous article, Rob Ford admitted to using crack. What if, instead of America laughing at Mayor Rob Ford, we helped him recognize that he might be suffering from the disease of addiction? This is as real as it gets; this is what the disease of addiction can look like.

Many people may be worried about Mayor Rob Ford and his recent behavior, but that is exactly what addiction can do to a person; addiction isn’t a moral dilemma, it’s a disease. The biggest difference between Mayor Rob Ford and millions of other people struggling with addiction, is that Ford has built a successful career and is under the spotlight at all times. His life is on full display: every fault, every slip, every action is being documented and used against him. Mayor Rob Ford is just one of many who struggles with drug abuse issues. When are we going to take this epidemic seriously? If Mayor Ford is suffering from addiction, then this progressive disease will continue to cause him and his community harm. The best option for Ford is to go to rehab and get into recovery. It just goes to show that the disease of addiction doesn’t care who you are or what your profession is: it completely takes over a person’s life.

Mayor Rob Ford grew up in Toronto, born and raised. Even after all of the allegations against him, he does appear to have the support of his family and some citizens. It seems that Mayor Rob Ford is trying to keep his life under control; for the addict who still suffers, this may continue to prove impossible. We will unfortunately continue to watch him fall until he reaches rock bottom and gets the help that any addict deserves. Drug addiction can turn any person into something and someone that they are not; it’s one of the only diseases which causes people to hate the person suffering from it. Although Mayor Ford claims that he has 3 weeks sober now, his actions speak otherwise. His most recent action proves that Mayor Rob Ford is struggling with something deeper than just a bad temper when Ford was caught on video pushing down a woman during a heated council meeting. Then the Mayor was caught on a video interview, yelling and saying curse words in front of children. Instead of the media and people across the country laughing and pointing fingers, the people should be recognizing that Mayor Ford is in desperate need of help. Although it appears that Mayor Rob Ford is in denial about his disease, treatment could still save his life and his future.
