SLAM NYC Tries To Open First Sober High School
Drug and alcohol abuse is becoming a major problem in the United States, especially in teens and young adults. The shocking truth is that the disease of addiction is killing people and destroying families nationwide, and prevention could save our youth. The disease of addiction brings a world of confusion, shame, and guilt and many teens that have entered recovery hide that they are clean and sober because of that stigma. This is what led a team of advocates like Thom Krauss, President & Co-Founder and Kristen Johnston, Executive Director & Co-Founder to create Sobriety, Learning and Motivation, also known as SLAM. SLAM is determined and dedicated to open up New York City’s first Sober High School.
Why Is There A Need For A Sober High School?
Recent studies show that 1 in 3 American teens meet the criteria for addiction. Roughly 1 in 7 American teens have attended a drug rehab, and half of all high school students currently use or abuse drugs or alcohol. That means roughly 6.1 million kids are struggling with some form of drug or alcohol abuse. A shocking reality is that many adults who are either currently in addiciton or in long-term recovery, stated that their addictions started in high school. How is it that, world-wide, we can find specialty schools for engineering or technical schooling, but barely any sober high schools with those kinds of numbers out there?
Say you or your loved one is in high school or junior high, they just get out of a substance abuse treatment center and are clean from drugs and alcohol. One of the things they teach addicts and alcoholics in rehab is to stay away from people, places and things that could trigger a relapse. How do we expect them to return to their high school without temptation? Wouldn’t it be great if there was a school that our teens could attend that promoted recovery and healthy living? If more people like Kristen Johnston speak up about addiction and recovery, this could become a reality.
